Subject: [*] cyber-gif-13.hqx
Here is the latest version of CyberGif.
Please put it into the ftp archives and replace V1.2.
#####CyberGif Version History
1.3 (January, 1993)
- Now allows all files that show up in "Open" dialog box to be
used in SlideShow!
- Fixes all known bombs that users had problems with.
- Fixes all known memory "leaks" that would force you to restart
CyberGif.
- Fixes problems some users had with multiple monitors.
1.2 (July, 1992)
- Fixes bomb some users had with bigger-than-the-screen GIFs.
1.1 (June, 1992)
- This version hopefully fixes the problems that some users had
with Mac LCs and the HDT Lightshow init. It also includes a way
to pause the slideshow.
1.0 (May, 1992)
- The first official release of CyberGif.
(Note: This is not the "next version" with lots of neat features that I have
been working on for the past few months. This is basically a bug-fix
version. Please bear with me while I finish up Version 2.0.
As a teaser, I'll tell you a few of the features Version 2.0 will have:
- Much-enhanced slide show. More controls and customization.
- GIF89a support.
- Works with any depth screen.
- Better dithering interface.
- and much, much, more!)
#####CyberGif Description
CyberGif is a Macintosh GIF viewer.
"Why another one?" you may ask. Well, I wasn't happy with the
state-of-the-art in Macintosh GIF viewers. So, I tried the other gif
viewers/editors and found the features that I wanted in a GIF viewer. These
features include:
-Fast Decode & Display--see the gifs as you decode them.
-Small Program Size--only 54k! Save disk space for GIFs--not viewers!
-Dithering--CyberGif allows black & white Macs (w/ColorQD) to see GIF files!
Please note that CyberGif does this AUTOMATICALLY only if all monitors hooked
up to the Mac are in two color mode. Multiple monitors of differing depths
may confuse CyberGif. A future version will fix this.
-Slide Show--just put the GIFs you want in a directory and watch the full
screen show! Also note that the GIFs must be of type 'GIFf' to be seen in the
slide show.
-Growable/Scrollable windows--you can choose to stretch/shrink the window!
-Fit Gif to Screen--and keeps the GIF proportions correct!
-Full Screen Window--for those times when a window and menu bar are too
distracting!
-System Palette Option--see how the GIF would look as a background picture!
-Information Window--look at the current GIF's colors and much more!
-Flash--get rid of color residue that most GIF viewer leave in the
background!
#####NOTES:
CyberGif has been developed and tested on a Macintosh IIcx running System 7.0
with both Virtual Memory and 32-bit mode on.
On any machine without Color Quickdraw, CyberGif dies a quick and ugly death.
This will be fixed in a future version.
On multiple-monitor machines, automatic dithering will NOT work unless ALL
screens are set to 1-bit mode.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 1.4.5 submission
Disk Charmer lets you format floppy disks, mapping out
automatically bad sectors (even under older Systems). I have
included the capability of making "big disks", by shortening
the space devoted to the disk catalog sectors; it is very
useful, given that you keep on a "big disk" a small number of
files (preferably one). You gain 9K on 800K, 19K on 1.4M disks.
Disk Charmer needs System 4.3 or later.

Here's a stack, and some example pictures, to let you examine the difference
between standard QuickDraw dithering and the "fast dithering" feature of

Hi,
I think I'm doing this right.
FindIt is a small application that will search the text files in folder full
of
files for a text string. The full path name of the file the text was found in,
the number of the line the text was found in, and the line itself are
displayed.
I keep a alias of the folder "Apple #includes" next to FindIt. When I need to
find out which header file to include for a function prototype, or the
prototype
itself, I just drop the alias on FindIt.
FindIt needs System 7 to run.

Duh, I'm stupid. I didn't realize that there were other files related
with the Ford Simulator, and hence only sent the application along with
the first time. So! Here is a folder containing the application and
all of the resource files it needs! Sorry to anyone who wasted the
bandwidth downloading it down.
This is a driving simulator put out by Ford a few years ago. It
lets you drive selected Ford models on three tracks: Test Track, which
has an obstacle course, City Challenge, which is like a freeway, and Back
Roads which is like Sunday driving with slow-moving trucks. Three levels
of difficulty are provided for each track.
It also has an Electronic Showroom, a Ford Buyer's Guide, and Ford
Infocenter to allow you to look at all the features of 1990's models. A
bit dated information, of course, but the game is fun for awhile.
Thanks, and sorry again!

This is Version 1.2 of this report and should replace the previous version

contributions from Digest and other readers to flesh it out. Send comments
and information to CompuServe: 72130,3557; AOL: bruceg6069; or Internet:
bgrubb@dante.nmsu.edu. This report covers not only present hardware and
software statistics and features but also future possibilities. Despite its
incomplete form it still provides some thought-provoking reading on the
relative merits, problems, and deficiencies of Macs and IBM PCs. Here is part
of the preamble for your prerusal:
"The reason for this general data sheet is that people in both camps are not
clear or accurate about what they are saying about their machines and what
little accurate info is out there is unconsolidated. When completed, this
data sheet should enable us to make convincing and intelligent comparisons
between Mac and IBM.
To keep this data sheet organized please provide, if possible, article
citations for the information provided or corrected and keep the opinions to a
minimum. As this is a general data sheet, keep the info provided simple so I
can understand what is being talked about and can explain it to others. Also
keep the information relevant to the section corrected. Finally just don't
say it's incomplete but give me the info to make it correct and provide clear
and consice corrections. Thank you."

Subject: [*] Mandella 8.4 fractal graphics program
Mandella is a wonderful graphics program for color Macs. It draws
a wide array of different fractal images. This file contains Mandella
8.4, a 45-page MS-Word manual, and 31 sample files. Mandella is loaded
with features including: multiple Mac style fractal windows, seven special
purpose windows, 69 fractal types, ten draw styles, eight transforms
(including 3D), four ways to automate drawing, a palette editor, etc.
The number of fractal windows is limited only by memory. Mandella works
on any color Mac with System 6 or later. Shareware $40.
Version 8.4 Changes
1) Modified the ZoomPoint automated drawing command:
a) The high and medium cutoffs are interpolated from between the
cutoffs for the original image and those for the first
preset.
b) Mandella will now either zoom straight in on the zoom point
or gradually move the center of the images from the center of
the first preset to the zoom point.
2) Overnight will now optionaly refrain from re-sizing the fractals.
3) Improved Fractint par file support:
a) LambaFn types are supported.
b) If the par was inverted Mandella will ask if you really want to
use it.
c) Memory is reclaimed properly if the user elects not to use a par.
Version 8.3 Changes
1) On Macs without an FPU presets requiring an FPU are not displayed.
2) Return and Enter can be used when entering palette ranges in the
Palette Editor.
3) Improved par file support:
a) Lines starting with semi-colons are now recognized as comments.
b) If Mandella would create a very wide or tall window (because
the par was distorted), Mandella will display an alert listing
the windows dimensions and ask if you really want to use the
par.
4) Misc minor improvements.

Subject: [*] MXM Clock 1.0.1
This is an update of MXMClock that I just sent out that crashed on computers
with bad/corrupt Menu Color entries. This version uses a pict instead of
obtaining the menu bar color for a background. I also added pref file
code. Now when you quit MXMClock it writes the changes to a prefs file.
You can change the location of the clock by clicking on it and dragging it
to a new location. When you quit, the new location will be saved.
It has some intelligence now that if the clock location is off the monitor,
it will move it on screen. I does not detect other menu icons though. It does
detect if the menubar height has been set to 0.
Below is the help text that is in the TEXT resource explaining how to change
parameters.
Help text is included in the TEXT Resource.

Enclosed is MXM Clock yet another menubar clock program.
This one requires 32bit color QD and a system running multifinder
or system seven.
In my constant vigil to replace all my startup documents with applications,
(I don't like things patching the system when it doesn't have to) I created
this clock program that I use to replace SuperClock. It doesn't do anything
fancy. It just displays the current time in the menubar.
This version requires resedit to change the options. I will fix this in a
later
version. Also I plan on making it a Background only app also.
Things you can set:
Display rect
Font
Font Size
Baseline
Show seconds
and Waitnextevent sleep time.
these things can be set in te CLCK resource. A template is provided for
editing.
This program is freeware.

Open Spaces is an extension which makes navigating through folders in the

Subject: [*] PowerLock-31
*** Moderators please note: this replaces the previous PowerLock-31 archive
which
was corrupted.
PowerLock Release 3
------------------
PowerLock is the "front door" to your Macintosh. It is an easy to use
start up application that can be completely configured and customised
to suit your own personal needs.
PowerLock started out as a start up security application, and this
remains its major task. However, through AddOn Technology, PowerLock
can become much more. Included with PowerLock are twelve AddOns that
provide new features ranging from improvements to PowerLock, to
completely new capabilities.
Here's a summary of features:
- fully System 7 and System 6 Savvy, exploiting each System with
features unique to each
- full use of color and sound effects
- includes a special Desk Accessory, Function Key and Extension
- support for both a startup graphic and a timeout graphic
- creates a log of all activity which can be analysed (via LogManager)
through PowerLock
- SuperSecurity: additional security options for "power users"
- all user names and passwords are encrypted
- registered users can obtain an access key for their copy of PowerLock
in case of a lock-out
- short cut keys available from all dialogs
- Auto-Install option (System 7 only)
- support for five users inbuilt or, via PowerUsers, up to 99 users of
your Macintosh. PowerUsers adds ability to limit access times,
restrict files and folders accessed, etc. AutoLogon automatically
re-establishes each users' server connections on startup.
- MasterPassword capability for corporate users
- PowerMessages provides a simple messaging system allowing users of a
single Macintosh to leave each other messages
PowerLock is ComboWare, a combination of PostCardWare and ShareWare. It can
be
used by individuals at home for the price of one PostCard. Use of
PowerLock in any other circumstances requires registration and payment
of the ShareWare fee. Education discounts apply. A registration form
can be found in the Manual.

Subject: [*] stylewriter-on-appletalk-1.1.hqx
Here is a new version of RemoteStyle. It should be archived as
stylewriter-on-appletalk-1.1.hqx, and replace the older version.
RemoteStyle allows you to share on appletalk a stylewriter,
original deskwriter, or any background-capable serial printer.
It can also transfer on a more powerful Mac the printing task for
any background-capable printer. Useful if your mac gets slow when
background printing, and if there is a Quadra nearby...
Shareware $10, unregistered copies work 5 weeks. Registered users
of previous version will receive a registration number. If you
don't, protest !
This version is a beta version. Apple released GrayShare just after
I spent some time improving the interface, and I stopped working

features, like fax-sharing (possible for most faxes with minor
changes).

Subject: [*] unAdobe - convert Adobe outline fonts to ascii
unAdobe.hqx
This is an old program (1988). It is *NOT* System 7 friendly!
In fact, it might not work on your system unless you do several
things. However, it enabled me to print my Macintosh Finale
documents on a Unix PostScript printer.
In order to get it to work on my Quadra, I had to turn off
Virtual Memory, 32-bit addressing, the Cache, and restarted
with all INITs off (one of my INITs didn't like unAdobe).
In order to use it, give it the name of an Adobe Type 1 font
(outline fonts are in your "Extensions" folder). It will output
(if it works) an uncompressed ascii version of the font.
For example, I created a PostScript dump in Finale: MusicFile.ps
and used unAdobe to convert the font "Petru" to Petru.unAdobe
Then I transfered both ascii files to Unix, and was able to print
them on a Unix printer using:
> cat Petru.unAdobe MusicFile.ps | lpr

About ViewIt Shareware Version 2.05
A shareware version of ViewIt(TM) is being made available to the Macintosh
programming community as a way of introducing ViewIt and other programming
modules from FaceWare. ViewIt is one of the best Mac programming tools
available for creating powerful windows containing many views and custom
controls. In addition to ViewIt, this package includes a complete list and
description of other, non-shareware FaceWare modules that support advanced
custom controls, animation, communications, dEatabase management,
QuickDraw(TM)
extensions, and 2D and 3D plotting. FaceWare modules are reasonably priced,
do not require license fees, are compatible with all major languages and
compilers, and are called using a simple C function, Pascal procedure, or
Fortran subroutine (a HyperCard(R) interface is also available).
ViewIt consists of a powerful set of programming modules that help programmers
manage menus, windows, and other elements of the Macintosh interface in new or
existing programs. ViewIt is uniquely designed to be much easier to use than
other "interface builders" by requiring a minimal amount of program code (as
little as 3 lines!), and supporting the on-line editing of windows from within
running programs (like HyperCard). The combination of ViewIt plus Apple's
ResEdit(TM) can be used in place of tools such as MacApp(R) and AppMaker(TM),
or as an enhancement of such tools. When you decide to purchase ViewIt, the
price is just $95.
ViewIt's major window-related features include:
-- support for editing modal and modeless windows from within running programs
-- multiple fonts, styles, and colors (w/o the limitations of standard ictb
resources)
-- a variety of useful custom controls (lists, menus, ICON/PICT buttons, etc.)
-- support for extended controls that can be as powerful as complete graphic
and text editors
-- a view hierarchy that supports scrolling and paging of groups of controls
-- direct links between program variables and control values
-- ability to override all control behavior
-- compatibility with existing CDEFs
-- imports existing dialog DITL resources
-- support for System 7 Balloon Help
The ViewIt package also includes a module that can be used to support standard
items in the main menu bar, tear-off menus, floating palettes, and the
required
Apple events.
The complete text of an objective, professional review of ViewIt that appeared
in the Nov/Dec 92 issue of MacTutor is included in the ViewIt demo program,
along with comments from a wide range of programmers who are currently using
ViewIt.

I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR A NUMBER OF MACS AND PEE-CEE'S, AND HAVE USED A
great variety of brands of disks in the past 7 years. My experience
has been that 3M disks, both 800K and 1.4MB, do go bad on a regular
basis. Interestingly, there are more problems when the disks are
used in PC drives than in Mac drives. I can say with complete
confidence, though, that the disks that I trust the least are Verbatim
disks. In the fall of 1986, I foolishly ordered a couple of boxes of
Verbatim disks because they were so much less expensive than
sony's (I was a freshman in college...I didn't know any better). That
was the last time I bought or used Verbatim disks becuase of all the
problems I had, until last year, when someone in Temple University's
purchasing department changed my order for Sony's to Verbatim

Subject: Bat Filer window problems
I recently downloaded Bat Filer, and it seems like it could be a
pretty good program, but I haven't been able to use it much, because
the "search files", "preferences", and "shareware notice" windows
all position themselves above the top of the screen, so that only
the bottom half of the windows are visible. Since the window title
area is off the screen, I am not able to reposition them. I've tried
using ResEdit to change the DLOG position, but it doesn't help. Has
anyone else had this problem? I am using an LCII with a standard 13"
screen.
The main thing I would like to use it for is to search multiple text
files for string matches. Are there any other programs out there that
can handle this? What I'm really looking for is something like the
VMS DCL command SEARCH, which will easily search any number of text
files for almost any number of strings in either an AND, OR, NAND, or
NOR combination. It allows for adjustable windows of strings to be
displayed above or below the found strings, and it can either direct
the output to the screen or to another text file. This is so useful
to me on the VAX, that I would really like to find something like it
for the Mac.
Thanks,
Dan

Subject: CAP60
I'm trying to build CAP60 on a Sparcstation with SunOS 4.1.1 and would
like to use it with several Mac IIci's which are also on ethernet.
As I understand the CAP60 directions I should not need a bridge, as in past
versions, but in that case I do need to install UAB. I can get UAB installed
but I'm not sure how successfully, it does show up in a ps -aux list.
Then I try to kick off aarpd. But try as I may it doesn't seem to
install. I have even tried to seed the /etc/etalk.local file following a
supplied example. I keep getting the following response to:
aarpd ie0 BioSci
/dev/nit: No such device or address
14:48:53 01/30/93 pi_open: aarp_init: No such device or address
init_enet: network initialization failed
BUT /dev/nit does exist, and I even chmod'd it to give everyone access!
I believe I have read all the README's and man pages, but I must be missing
something... any pointers?

Subject: Comprehensive info on Feb. 10 Macs
I'm bored so you don't have to be ...
Here are the specs on the new Apple hardware coming out on Feb. 10:
* CPUs
1) Color Classic - Like the Classic II in that it has the "crippled"
16-bit data bus, so it won't be fast. It will diplay 256 colors on a
built-in Trinitron or 32,768 colors with extra VRAM. As with all the
new CPUs, it uses a different SIMM slot than existing Macs. This
slot is a 72-pin slot and can take 32MB SIMMs. The Color Classic,
though, is limited to 10MB total. It has a PDS slot and an FPU
socket. It has a built-in microphone, and, like all the new CPUs,
comes with the new curvy, ergonomic mouse. It meets the Swedish
radiation emission requirements (nice) but it is ugly (not nice).
The Classic II remains available indefinitely.
2) LCIII - For the first time since the Apple III debable, the
Cupertino kids go for a III designation. This one, though, is a
winner. 25MHz 030 (like the IIci, PB 160, 170; much faster than the
16MHz LCII, Color Classic, Classic II) with a 32-bit data bus
(hurrah!). PDS slot, FPU socket. Supports 256 color on displays up
to 16" (hurrah!) and 16 grays on Mac Portrait display. With
additional VRAM can do 32,768 colors on 13/14" [really the same]
monitors and 256 on 16" color or equivalent number of grays on
Portrait. That new SIMM socket, 72 pins, not 30 like the old ones,
can take one 32MB SIMM and bring the machine from 4MB to 36MB.
Supports RAM Disks with Apple standard System 7.1. Apple will offer
40, 80 or 160MB hard disks. The Apple IIe card is supported! There
is a logic board upgrade from the LC and LCII. Looks just like an
LCII. LCII will not be discontinued at this time, just cheaper.
3) Centris 610 - A 20MHz 68LC040, which is a 68040 with the FPU
functions disabled. Apple says it should twice as fast as a
IIci/IIvx. 4MB RAM, 2 SIMM slots (new 72-pin slots, by the way, if
you haven't been paying attention). Max ram is therefore 68MB.
RAM Disk support, of course. 256 color on monitors up to 16" with
standard VRAM, also 16 colors on 21 inch and 16 grays on Portrait.
With optional VRAM, we're talking 32,768 colors on 16-inch monitor
(that's 16-bit color to you and me folks). 256 color or gray on
21-inch and Portrait, respectively. Integrated microphone. Internal
bay for removable half-height 5.25-inch device, like the Apple
CD-300 or your favorite flavor or Syquest, DAT, Bernoulli. One PDS
slot, which can take a 7-inch NuBus board with an adapter from
Apple. Optional on-board Ethernet (which, like on the Quadras
requires a transceiver). Two ADB ports. Hard disks of 80, 230 or 500
MB (Apple's biggest offering to date). Look like a taller LC with a
huge secondd mouth (when the CD is installed). Fewer grooves in the
case). IIsi and IIci are both gone for good. IIvx lives on to hold
down the territory between LCIII and Centris 610.
4) Centris 650 - 25MHz 68LC040 stanard but the full 25MHz 68040 is
available from Apple. Quadra 700 speeds, which is good, because the
Quadra 700 is discontinued. This guy is in the IIvx/Performa 600
case, so you know what it looks likes. Same video support as Centris
610, also has Ethernet on-oard option. Same hard disks. Four SIMM
slots, for a potential total of 132MB RAM (using 72-pin SIMMs,
of 32MB each). Looks like the IIvx, which I don't like personally
[especially the unwieldy metal case], but you may.
5) Quadra 800 - The 950s little sister. 33MHz 68040 with integrated
FPU. 8MB RAM, expandable to 136MB. On board Ethernet. Same video as
Centris, i.e. 16-bit color on 16-inch monitors with optional VRAM.
One PDS, three NuBus slots BUT ... If you use the PDS it blocks one
NuBus slot. Has room for two 3.5inch hard disks one half-height
5.25-inch removable (see above for details). Looks funky. Dimensions
are 14.25 height x 8.9 width x 16.0 depth (in inches, 30.6 x 19.6 x
39.6 in cm). Weighs 25 pounds [or more with more internal devices]
so it may be made of metal (as may the Centris 610).
6) Powerbook 165c - 33MHz 68030 and 33MHz 68882 (FPU). 4MB,
expandable to 14MB. Just like 180 but with passive-matrix color
instead of active-matrix grayscale. 256 colors, 9-inch screen no
10-inch like other non-Duo Powerbooks. 160-meg drive available from
Apple (at last!). 160, 180 live on. Even Apple won't claim the
battery lasts more than 2 hours. They say 1.5-2. Probably will be
less. Looks like 140/170/160/180/145.
Review: Centris is overdue and probably a winner in the war against
486 [not a winner, winner, just a winner]. LCIII brings ci
performance down near $1,000. New SIMM style means high RAM prices
at first, but chips are the same so they'll reach parity soon
enough. Quadra 800 is machine of choice for power users who don't
need many slots and bays (like in the 950, which still exists).
PB 165c will be for those who need portable color, screen will be
like most DOS color laptops, kind of icky. Color Classic will sell,
but most should go to LCIII for a little more money and a lot more
power.
Don't ask where the info came from. Don't e-mail me any questions.
Do wait for the story on the new Laserwriter Selects (later today).
Do begin a discussion of the plusses and minuses. I will weight in
on Feb. 12 or so with a price/performance comparison: Apple vs.
Dell/Compaq/Gateway/IBM. OOOOOOOOH! I can sense your excitement
[self-mocking tone intended].

I had asked if $2500 was a fair price for a IIcx with a 13" color

listed these two at a combined price of around $2300. Due to lead
times, I imagine the numbers are a little high because of price drops
since the data was gathered.
The student bought the computer on Tuesday. Based on my reassurances
that if you can save, etc. in one Mac application, you can do it in all
of them, he spent the evening playing with Pixel Paint. He finished

was fine for him. He was so happy, I did not ask him if the software
was pirated. ;-) One lecture's enough.

Subject: Lpr 1.2 Answers to Frequent Questions
Since lpr 1.2 was added to the archives, several people have asked
about Postscript support, and about the availability of source code.
Here are the answers for others who may have the same questions.
Printing Postscript
Lpr doesn't include any explicit support for Postscript. However,
it is possible to turn off all formatting in lpr, so that it will
send a Postscript file to the lpd daemon unchanged. In many cases,
that will allow the file to be properly interpreted. To turn off
formatting, select "Formatting" from the "Settings" menu, and click
on the "none" button. If you are printing multiple Postscript files
at once, also select "Suppress form feeds between files".
Lpr Source Code
Lpr is written using MPW C version 3.2. Although I haven't tried it,
it shouldn't be very difficult to use the source with Think C. To
get the source, use anonymous FTP to brownvm.brown.edu, and retrieve
the file lpr12src.seahqx.

Subject: Mac SE/Classic Problem
About 3 months ago, I installed a program called Searchware on a Mac SE at
our school. Searchware is used to access the Dialog (knowledge index)
databases. Just as Searchware started connecting with a modem and the Mac
SE, the computer (not the modem) started to make a strange buzzing type
sound, the screen images scrambled and then the computer re-booted itself.
I then installed Searchware on our Mac portable and it ran flawlessly with
the same modem. I was then lucky enough to get the use of a Mac Classic
that wasn't being used in the school. I installed Searchware and it again
ran flawlessly for a month with the same modem, until yesterday. The exact
same problem appeared with the Classic as I had with the Mac SE. I checked
with Searchware but no solution has come forth yet. All the Macs that I
mentioned above were running system 7, the Classic is running 7.1 I
checked to see if anyone had been playing with any of the settings both on
the software and the Mac. I could see no obvious change.
Anyone heard of and/or dealt with a problem like this before? I'm
desparate for help on this one as a new semester starts Monday and I've got
some kids waiting to get going with this program. Thanks for any

Sorry--I misinterpreted your posting. Your dealer was talking about using the
external HD on the desktop Mac, not the Duo. (It would be hooked between both
computers.)
Well, in this case you COULD put external HDs and printers between the two
computers--your SCSI chain can have up to seven devices, including the
internal
HDs in both computers--but you certainly wouldn't HAVE to, unless there is
some bug in the Duo's ROMs that nobody is talking about. (Not very likely,
since the other PowerBooks released at the same time don't have such a bug.)
And, as everyone on earth now knows except for your dealer, you can't use your
external floppy port (it's called an HDI-20, by the way). You need the port

I create a lot of PostScript (actually EPSF) graphics in Mathematica
and I like to include them in LaTeX documents for publication (I use
Lightning Textures on a Mac). I save the Mathematica graphics as
EPSF files and then I read them into Canvas 3.0.5 and make any
addition that I would like. After making additions (you can't
change anything), I save the file as an EPSF file out of Canvas.
This file is then easily incorporated into LaTeX using the epsf.tex
macro.
If anyone would like epsf.tex, please let me know. If you have any
questions regarding this procedure, just email and I'll do what I
can.

Subject: PostScript printer---which to buy? (Q)
In Murph's VAPORWARE Column for February 1993 [vaporware-02-93.txt]
he mentions
[Apple's] 300 dpi level 1 PostScript LW Select 310 will list for
$1,079.
This sounds great, for an educational price ought to be somewhat
lower. My question is, should I buy Apple's new LW S310, or the new
DEClaser 1152 (which is PS-level 2 and can be had for $999+ until
the end of March)?
Any responses (opinions, etc.) would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: Software to emulate 68030 ops? (Q) ]
Hello Mac'ers on the net!
I am programming in MPW Assembler on my lowly 68000 Mac+. Of course
I have hit a brick wall trying to write anything useful. Half of the
interesting instructions run on a 68020 and higher. So I am wondering
if there is any software out there that will take a 68020 instruction
such as MULS.L or DIVSL.L and convert it to a 68000 equivalent code
routine. Is there such a beast? How hard would it be to write the
equivalent code for something like DIVSL.L (TDIVS.L in MPW) for a
68000? Any leads or suggestions would be great!

>BTW, what is the latest version of ATM?
I have been using SuperATM and it seems to be useless unless I
were to start a service bureau. It works great if you need it. It will
replicate even some wierd fonts so that you could print them or
whatever. It also allows you to create some fake fonts so that
you could do a Newsletter, for instance, using Americana and Goudy
even though you don't have those fonts. This would work if you
planned on taking the doc to a service bureau to get it printed.
Other than SuperATM, I believe that the latest ATM is 3.0.
Any other opinions?

Subject: Super Studio Session
Eric Oehler asked a question about Super Studio Session in IM#23. I have
had a lot of experience with this program, however the program is not
being updated anymore and I believe it has a lot of incompatabilities
with the newer macs and newer system software. It was a good program
if you liked realistic digitized sounds with 8 channels, but there is
no MIDI input and no realistic notation editing and scoring. If you
just want to play around it is a great program that works on the same
sort of basis as Sound Tracker does (or whatever its called). It
came with 3 disks of digitized instruments that you could use. I'm
not sure where you can get it except from somebody who still has the
master disks. Good luck..

I, too, need information about accessing System Enablers. I had no more
success cruising bric-a-brac.apple.com than Alan Dobkin had; and I even
tried accessing WAIS, but with no better luck. Specifically, I am going
to need the System Enabler for the IIvx which takes care of this machine's
problems with MIDI and would appreciate any pointer to a source from which
I can ftp this code.

Subject: text reader, filter, and editor (Q)
I am looking for a program that will read, filter, and edit text. I already
have Add/Strip, which filters text. Additionally, I have Easy Viewer, which
reads text. I am looking for a third program that will allow me to edit
text files that may be as big as 90k. Additionally, if anyone knows of a
program that wil read, filter, and edit all in one, that would be even
better.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: What system should I use on Mac 512K?
I saw that old versions of the system software are now available from
ftp.apple.com (everything back to 5.0). Is 5.0 old enough to use on a Mac
512, or do I need yet an older version? If so, where might I find it?
(This is for a friend who just picked up a 512 Mac cheap).
Please reply by email--thanks!
